Teeth Whitening

This is a process in which teeth are usually bleached to make them look whiter. It is a cosmetic treatment in which incorporated stains or other discolorations are removed from the surface of the teeth to improve their appearance.

This is a simple procedure that can be done in the dental office with the guidance of a dentist within 1 hour

There are various forms of teeth whitening procedures, the In-office Bleaching, Chair-side Bleaching and Power Bleaching are all known as whitening treatments done by a dentist.

The teeth whitening solution contains hydrogen peroxide-a bleaching agent with a concentration of 15%-35%

SUBSTANCES THAT STAIN OR DISCOLOUR TEETH

• Coffee     • Cigarettes     • Tea     • Wine

Procedure

First a gel is applied around the gums of the teeth in order to protect the gums from the bleach

Then the whitening agent is applied on the facial surfaces of the upper and lower front teeth

This is left on the teeth for about 20-25 minutes after which the gel is sucked out

The process is repeated and after another 20-25 minutes, the whitening agent is finally removed

The teeth are washed and cleaned

If necessary the application of a desensitization agent will be used

Aftercare

  • Avoid smoking and caffeinated beverages for the first 48 hours.
  • Drink caffeinated beverages with a straw.
  • Brush teeth immediately after consuming the food items that cause discoloration.

Risks

  • Teeth whitening can cause sensitivity to hot & cold food and beverages.
  • This is usually a temporary side effect that ends after a few days.
  • Some may experience gum irritation, if the bleaching agent touches the gum.

Teeth Whitening is Not Advised

  • During pregnancy
  • For children below 16 years of age.
  • For severe grey or brown discoloration (eg, tetracycline stains), as significant results may not be seen.
  • Fillings crowns, bridges Implants will not change colour It is advisable that you consult your dentist and get a good evaluation of the discoloration before treatment is done.

This is the application of a highly concentrated form of fluoride; to the tooth's surface by a dentist.

How does it protect teeth?

It provides extra protection against tooth decay by making your teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugar.

This is achieved by:

  • Increasing remineralization of the enamel.
  • Decreasing demineralization of enamel.
  • Controlling the growth of plaque, bacteria or tooth decay.
  • Strengthening the surface of teeth.

A quick look at how this is done

  • Teeth are cleaned to remove obvious debris.
  • Dried with a cotton swab.
  • Fluoride gel is applied with a brush, on the surface of all teeth.

Aftercare

  • Avoid food and drinks for about 2 hours.
  • Avoid brushing teeth on the day of the procedure.
  • Can be applied once in every six months.

For whom is this procedure most suitable?

  • Children (above 2 years of age) and adults with more than two decayed teeth in their mouth
  • People wearing orthodontic braces, who have a high risk of developing enamel and dental cavities.
  • Toddlers who have nursing bottle syndrome.

How often can teeth be varnished?

  • Fluoride varnishing can be done every 6 months.

Clear braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, but use tooth-colored or clear brackets to help them blend in with the teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to make them less noticeable.

Why choose Clear Braces?

  • The alignment of crookedly erupted teeth in a jaw can be corrected by orthodontic appliances or braces. This process usually requires a minimum of six months.
  • Conventional braces are made with metal, making them very Obvious, often leading to embarrassment while they are in use.
  • Clear braces are less visible and minimise uncomfortable visual experiences.
